Sleep: the best therapy

Sleep quality

A good life starts with a good sleep. There are those happy sleepers who fall asleep as soon as their head hits the pillow, who wake up fresh and ready for anything. And then there are the insomniacs, tossing and turning all night, fretting about their lack of sleep. Sleep quality and health concerns are very often connected. Sleep is the elixir of youth, the foundation of our health. We spend a third of our lives asleep, and the average number of hours of sleep has decreased considerably over the past century. Basically, sleep plays a vital role in our quality of life.

Would you run a marathon or hike in the mountains without the right equipment? Of course not, it's way too dangerous. The same goes for sleep, nothing should be overlooked. Lack of sleep harms your health. A good bed can instil a new, calmer pace of life.

Can you really put a price on quality sleep? Nowadays, there is an imbalance in all these functions. Many health conditions are connected to lack of sleep. For example, not enough sleep can lead to the development of obesity. There is no time wasted sleeping, as some specialists confirm. On the other hand, time wasted on not sleeping is another matter altogether. Particularly if we spend it on front of our screens: televisions, computer, smartphone, tablet.

Insomnia

The 2017 Nobel Prize in Medicine was awarded to three Americans (Jeffrey C. Hall, Michael Rosbash and Michael W. Young) for their work on the discovery of circadian rhythms or our biological clock. For some time, scientists believed that our body clock was entirely controlled by our brain. It turns out that it is our cells that regulate our sleep, diet, temperature, mood, memory and blood pressure. By a clock system. It is these same cells that provide the essential function for our balance. Hence the insomnia caused by the changes in society and its demands. Every day, if you get two hours less sleep, you lose one full night per week.

We have two types of insomnia:

- Temporary insomnia: the symptoms are linked to a specific situation that is often easily identifiable. These type of insomnia can still last a few weeks.

- Chronic insomnia: difficulty sleeping at least 3 nights a week, for at least one month.

Insomnia is the symptom rather than an illness in itself, a little like a fever. Before treating it, you must find the underlying cause.

Lack of sleep

Studies show that a lack of sleep throws off our pace of life. The great danger is feeling sleepy wherever you are. Lack of alertness can put you in difficult situations, even in danger.

The motto: sleep is crucial, it is anything but a waste of time. Sleeping well regularly is important, not only to put us in a good mood and energetic but also for long-term health.
