The hidden side of the mattress
Today, although the principle of turning your mattress twice a year is known to everyone, few people actually do it, know when to do it and even for what purpose. Rather in line with the habits of the previous generation, mattresses with two sleeping sides are sometimes rejected in favour of single-sided mattresses (also called 'no-flip' mattresses), which are not turned over, considered more practical and often slightly cheaper to buy.
For a long time, in tune with this unfailing desire to promote French-style sleeping skills, Treca has offered its sleepers two very specific sleeping surfaces, identifiable thanks to the embroidered handle: if you read the name the right way, then you're going to rest on the winter side. Although it may seem tedious to turn your mattress, the solid handles allow you to do so, for two, without any difficulty, so you can then enjoy cosy comfort on cold winter nights or, on the contrary, thermoregulatory properties during increasingly frequent episodes of summer heat waves. Optimum comfort in all seasons, that’s the promise of a Treca mattress. But what’s the secret of the mattress that helps it regulate the heat so well according to the season?
It is a well-kept secret, that of the know-how of Treca master craftsmen who skilfully mix different layers of natural materials to obtain a sleeping surface suited to a season. Of course, the materials are more or less expensive depending on the range and have intrinsic qualities of warmth or ventilation conducive to their use in a high-end or luxury mattress.
Winter or summer: the head-to-head of the materials
One of the most used natural materials for filling is of course wool, whether for the winter side or the summer side of the mattress, because it is able to trap a large amount of air and its scales limit air exchange. It protects against hot and cold. Plus, it regulates moisture by absorbing up to 30% of its weight in water without feeling wet. It's its density or the use of specific wools that will make it possible to compose sleeping surfaces that meet the desired criteria.
Arles Merino sheep wool, for example, is unquestionably the finest wool in Europe: both very curly and very fine, it offers a very light layer thanks to its finesse and very warm thanks to its crimp and swelling. Alpaca wool, on the other hand, is a light, resistant, elastic and warm fibre. It has recognized insulating properties thanks to its hygroscopic qualities, i.e., it slowly absorbs humidity from the air. In summer, linen, silk or cotton are widely used for their lightness and cool feel, pleasant when the surrounding air is very hot. These materials will also limit excessive perspiration, further increasing the comfort and quality of sleep.
From one side to the other, hand-sewn quality
As you will have understood, it is the harmonious blend of natural materials with varied properties that makes it possible to create an exceptional mattress, equipped with two very distinct sleeping surfaces, ensuring you unparalleled comfort all year round. But how is it made?
Each material is received at the Treca workshops in the form of a roll. The craftsmen cut each piece of material to the correct size and stack the different layers like a 'millefeuille' cake. Arranged on either side of the pocket springs, each filling, containing the different layers of materials for summer and winter, is then assembled so as not to move within the mattress. This operation is called stitching. The tighter the stitching, the more the mattress will resist over time, but also the firmer the comfort. Maison Treca goes even further and fully pads its mattresses, i.e., the craftsmen connect the two sides of the mattress by hand with ties that cross the layers of the padding and the suspension. The two sides of the mattress thus allow you to enjoy perfect comfort at any time of the year, but also an increased longevity of the mattress since both sides are used instead of just one. It is generally recommended to turn it over for the summer side at the end of spring when the night temperatures remain quite high and to return to the winter side in the autumn at the first sign of the first frosts.
